Black, father, photographer, and teacher, born in Rio de Janeiro, I've worked for over 43 years in the audiovisual market. I am recognized for my work in movie still photography, having worked on over 120 films, established directors, and awarded movies.
Many photographers influenced the technical and theoretical development of my work; my photographer's eye was shaped by my experience with masters such as José Medeiros and Nelson Pereira dos Santos. However, my uncle, Zózimo Bulbul, was the one responsible for introducing me to theater and cinema and it was because of his influence that, by 17, I set foot on my first film set. He was essential for my growth as a professional and citizen.
In 1979/1980, while following his creative process during the short film "Dia de Alforria" (Manumission Day) with the musician Aniceto do Império, I understood the necessary political questioning of the social and political black archetypes.
In still photography, I aim to capture the essence of the characters and groups and register the script's main focus.
In my photography, I seek narrative imagery, using the works of Caravaggio as study, my process uses the contrast between shadow and light, always searching for the refinement of simplicity.
